Generac Generator Warranty Explained: Coverage, Voids & 10-Year Extension

Generac's 5-year warranty covers different things each year. Years 1–2 include parts, labor, and travel. Year 3 drops to parts only. Years 4–5 cover only the major parts components. This guide explains what voids your warranty, how to register, and how to extend coverage to 10 years through an authorized dealer in Southwest Florida.

01

Quick Answer

Most Generac home standby generators carry a **5-year or 2,000-hour limited warranty**. Years 1–2 cover parts, labor, and limited travel. Year 3 covers parts only. Years 4–5 cover only the major parts components. With an authorized dealer you can extend coverage to **7 or 10 years** — but you must purchase the extension within 12 months of activation.

02

Year-by-Year Coverage

Years 1–2: all covered parts + labor + limited travel (≤100 miles round trip per visit). Year 3: all covered parts, no labor, no travel. Years 4–5: major parts components only, no labor, no travel. All repairs must be performed by an authorized Generac service dealer.

03

Which Models Get Which Warranty

Guardian series (home standby): 5 years / 2,000 hours, extended warranty eligible. PowerPact: 3 years, no extension available. EcoGen: 3 years / 2,000 hours, no extension available.

04

What the Warranty Does Not Cover

Routine maintenance (oil, filters, spark plugs, batteries, fuses). Damage from improper installation or sizing. Contaminated fuel, oil, or coolant. Acts of God (hurricane, flood, lightning, tornado). Rodent, reptile, or insect damage. Normal wear and tear. Steel enclosure corrosion after year 1. Travel beyond 100 miles round trip. Accessories with separate warranties (cold weather kit, Load Manager, Mobile Link).

05

What Voids Your Warranty

Installation not per manual or local codes. Moving the generator from original site. Modifying the exhaust system. Installing indoors. Using as primary power source. Using to charge batteries. Using non-Generac parts. Skipping maintenance or losing service records. Unauthorized repairs. Failing to register the unit.

06

When the Clock Starts

Warranty begins on the date of **successful activation and online registration** — not purchase date, not manufacture date. If never activated, Generac defaults to the manufacture date, so months of coverage can be lost if the unit sits in a warehouse.

07

How to File a Warranty Claim

All claims go through an authorized dealer. Gen-Power process: 1) Call and describe the issue — we verify warranty status. 2) On-site diagnosis by licensed technician. 3) We submit the claim to Generac with photos, codes, and maintenance records. 4) Generac approves and we complete the repair.

08

Extended Warranty: 7 to 10 Years

Must be purchased within 12 months of activation. Air-cooled: 5-yr $535, 7-yr $735, 10-yr $1,035. Liquid-cooled: 5-yr $750, 7-yr $1,065, 10-yr $1,485. Covers parts, labor, and travel for the full period. Generator must be registered and under a maintenance contract.

09

Florida: How Not to Lose Your Warranty

Salt air: enclosure rust covered only in year 1 — annual inspections for coastal homes. Keep every maintenance record — Generac can deny claims without dated records. Seasonal homes: weekly exercise cycle and annual maintenance still required. Pre-hurricane inspection every May/June.

010

How to Register Your Generator

Go to register.generac.com. Enter serial number and purchase/startup date. Provide owner name, address, and installation address. Gen-Power handles registration during commissioning.

011

Protect Your Investment

Gen-Power is a Generac PowerPro Premier dealer and authorized service center serving Lee, Collier, and Charlotte County. New installations with 10-year warranty, annual maintenance, or warranty claims on existing units.

LET’S MAKE IT CLEAR

Frequently asked questions about standby generators in Southwest Florida

A clear plan starts with answers you can use.

Ask our team
Does the warranty transfer if I sell my home?

Yes. The warranty transfers to the new homeowner if the generator stays at its original installation site. Call Generac at 888-436-3722 to update registration.

Does the warranty cover hurricane or flood damage?

No. Acts of God including hurricanes, floods, lightning, and tornadoes are explicitly excluded. Check your homeowner's insurance.

Do I lose the warranty if I skip maintenance?

Generac can deny a claim if the failure relates to missed maintenance or you lack dated service records.

Is the 10-year extended warranty worth it?

For a Guardian 22 kW it costs $1,035. A single control board replacement can cost $800–$1,200 in parts alone.

Will Gen-Power service a generator another company installed?

Yes. We service and file warranty claims on any registered Generac in Lee, Collier, or Charlotte County.

How long do I have to buy the extended warranty?

Within 12 months of the generator's activation date. No late enrollment.
